Motor racing wasn’t always on Mikkelsen’s sporting horizon, and he started off on skis, becoming a member of the Norwegian junior team at the age of 12. However, a knee injury brought his career to a premature end, prompting a switch to rallying when he was 16.
To fast-track his progress he moved to Britain in 2006 and made his WRC debut the same year.
The following season Mikkelsen finished in the top 10 on three world events, and fifth at the 2008 Rally Sweden, when just 17 years and 233 days old, made him the youngest driver to win a world championship point.
He won the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) at the wheel of a Škoda Fabia S2000, and successfully defended his title in 2012 when he also contested eight WRC rounds for the fledgling Volkswagen Motorsport team.
The Norwegian stepped up to a Polo World Rally Car in 2013 and the following season he made the WRC podium for the first time in Sweden en route to third in the points.
More was expected in 2015 - and he didn’t disappoint. A podium finisher on nine occasions, he bagged his maiden win in Spain and again ended third in the drivers’ standings.
He added victories in Poland and Australia in 2016 as he claimed third in the championship for the third season, but they were not enough to land a 2017 drive when Volkswagen left the WRC.
Mikkelsen kept match-fit in the early part of that year in a WRC2 Škoda Fabia, before Citroën recruited him to boost its troubled campaign. Hyundai came calling on a similar rescue mission to aid its flagging manufacturers’ championship hopes and he joined the team for the final three rounds of 2017.
He remained with the Korean squad but 2018 was disappointing, and Mikkelsen netted just one podium finish. He helped Hyundai win the manufacturers’ title the following year but was released at the end of the season after struggling with the i20, especially on asphalt.
He was Pirelli’s test driver in 2020 as the Italian tyre company prepared for its WRC return in 2021. His only competitive drive was in the season finale at Monza when he finished a remarkable sixth overall and won WRC3 in a Fabia.
For 2021, Mikkelsen leads Toksport’s WRC2 team in a Fabia.
