His first foray into co-driving came in 1987 when he entered Rally Vidal de la Peña, but it was in 1994 when started his first WRC event alongside Jesus Puras.
This partnership proved tremendously successful in their native Spain, and the pair won three Spanish Championships.
In 2004, del Barrio joined forces with Dani Sordo for an initial four-event campaign as the young Spaniard was looking for an experienced co-driver.
The pair reunited in 2011 for a longer WRC program, at MINI and then Citroën, which included three podiums and a popular victory at the 2013 edition of ADAC Rallye Deutschland.
After three seasons competing in Spain, del Barrio rejoined Sordo in 2018 and they will tackle six rounds with Hyundai Motorsport in 2019.
