The Estonian found positives from an at-times troublesome outing at Tet Rally Latvia – primarily the news that he has moved into a clear second place in the championship for the first time this year. Previously, Tänak had shared second place with Toyota rival Elfyn Evans, but his haul of 22 points in Liepāja has moved him five clear of the Welshman and to within eight of series leader Thierry Neuville.
Tänak said: “Finland is next, and one of my favourite events – those roads are made for rallies. Toyota will be very fast again but we will give it our all – we are always full attack.
“Latvia was a tough one, Sunday was a good day and Saturday was not too bad pace wise. We managed to get back into a rhythm after a difficult Friday, where we definitely had the wrong tyre choice and were struggling with the set up.
“We seem to be fighting with something and fighting back a bit, but things are, somehow, playing a little bit in our favour [in terms of the championship].”
Despite his challenging Polish outing, Tänak has outscored title rivals Neuville and Evans in four of the past five events - primarily thanks to his pacey performances on Super Sundays.
