New deal secures EKO Acropolis Rally Greece’s WRC future

WRC Promoter has inked a significant two-year extension with EKO Acropolis Rally Greece, securing the event’s place in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar until at least 2027*.

The landmark agreement was confirmed on Thursday (June 27) during an exclusive launch dinner at the Tennis Club of Athens which was graced by prominent figures and long-term supporters of the event including Greek Sports Minister Yiannis Vroutsis and his predecessor Lefteris Avgenakis.

In a return to tradition, it will start from the capital city, Athens, and revert to its historic June date in 2025. The last Greek WRC round to be held in June was in 2013, with the rally more recently taking place in September.

As a founding member of the WRC’s inaugural season in 1973, the Acropolis Rally is one of the championship’s most historically and strategically significant events. It boasts legendary mountain stages such as Elatia, Bauxites and Tarzan, renowned as some of the most challenging in the sport since the seventies.

“We are thrilled to extend our partnership with the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece,” said WRC Promoter Managing Director Jona Siebel. “This rally is a cornerstone of our championship and a favorite among our global fanbase and competitors alike.

“None of this would be possible without the support from Prime Minister Mitsotakis since day one. I must also acknowledge the invaluable contributions from Lefteris Avgenakis in the past and Yiannis Vroutsis now. Their understanding of the positive impact that bringing the WRC to Greece creates has been instrumental, and we look forward to continuing this journey in 2026 and 2027."

Sports Minister Vroutsis expressed his gratitude to HELLENiQ ENERGY for continuing its support of the event through EKO and added: “In its modern history, the Acropolis Rally has successfully transformed into an institution with strong foundations. The government's support guaranteed the rally's collaboration with the private sector.

“Today, we are in a stronger position than ever to discuss the future with FIA and the WRC Promoter. Together, we are progressing to improve the event. In the past four years, the EKO Rally Acropolis has been re-established as one of the iconic WRC rallies. It has achieved success through a well-prepared approach and a collective effort that continues today and will expand in the years to come, making it a safe space for creativity.”
