Smyth almost lost her life in a crash on the final round of the Australian Rally Championship in 2009 when she and her brother hit a tree at high speed in their Subaru Impreza. She has undergone six operations since the accident and Monday’s procedure means that all the supporting metal rods have been removed from her body.

“I had rods removed from both of my femurs about 12 months ago and this was my last piece of metalwork to be taken out,” she said. “It’s great to finally have all the rods out and not make every airport think I have a gun hidden in my legs. In the crash my legs were broken in nine places and at long last they can stand alone again.”

Reeves and Smyth are currently searching for funds to continue in the WRC Academy in 2012. Before then they will contest a Tarmac event in their native Australia in January.
