Swedish rally driver, Per-Gunnar 'P-G' Andersson has received the Abu Dhabi Spirit of the Rally award for Rally Sweden in recognition of his outstanding performance on his home round of the World Rally Championship.
Andersson, 29, put in a near flawless performance throughout the opening round of the new Super 2000 (S-WRC) category, claiming nine consecutive stage wins on the way to a comfortable victory by 57.3 seconds.
The Abu Dhabi Spirit of the Rally award, created by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), is presented at each WRC round to mark an outstanding feat of leadership, integrity, respect or teamwork.
“P-G and his fan base demonstrated that nothing can substitute home support and local knowledge. The young Swede excelled on his familiar terrain, taking full advantage of his Scandinavian heritage and respectfully rewarding his dedicated fans with a triumph," said Ahmed Hussein, Deputy Director General, ADTA.
“It is up-and-coming talent and ability such as this that we wish to recognise and to urge our own budding sportsmen to emulate,” he added.
After accepting the award, Andersson, who won the J-WRC title in 2004 and 2007, said he was grateful to the crowds of supporters who had spurred him on throughout the event.
“It’s a great feeling to be appreciated for what you are doing, it’s a special emotion,” he said. “The number of supporters has been much better than I expected. With no Swedish drivers in WRC and me leading the S-WRC, for sure they are supporting me and making a difference to how I drive.”
