Opposite to the last couple of years, Corsica moves in 2007 to autumn after Spain. Cornering technique comes into its own on the island of Corsica, however. The event isn't nicknamed the rally of 10,000 corners for nothing. Although faster and wider than in previous years, the route still winds its way up into the mountains above Ajaccio, providing a stern test for driver and tyre alike.

Corsica is a dramatic, mountainous island, with its peaks rising rapidly out of the sea. The island's capital, Ajaccio, is home to Rally HQ for the weekend. It's more famous for being the birthplace of France's most famous son, Napoleon Bonaparte, and in its winding, narrow streets you can indulge France's two great pastimes - eating great food and watching the world go by. The cuisine is full of spicy strong flavours, with specialities including goats cheese, wild boar and a fish soup called dziminu.

Drivers must thread the thin line between the towering cliffs on one side and the gut-wrenching drops on the other. The abrasive roads are hard on tyres, yet they are also dirty, meaning a lack of grip. The g-forces experienced by the in-car crews also tend to be higher, as the cars slew from hairpin to hairpin. As a result of this triple whammy of abuse it can be worth heading to the end of stages to see battered and bruised cars and drivers pushing to the end. It's definitely a rally for the asphalt specialists and only four non-French drivers have come away with victory in the past 20 years.
