PWRC
preview:
RallyRACC-
Rally de
Espana

Talk about being wide open. With six drivers in contention for the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship on RallyRACC-Rally de Espana this week, an enthralling battle for title spoils is in store on the mixed-surface stages of Catalunya.

Following Peruvian Nicolas Fuchs’ maiden victory on the previous round in Italy, 22 points separate the top six drivers starting what will be the last PWRC event before the world championship support categories are restructured for next season.

Three podiums including two outright victories in Mexico and Argentina, has helped Benito Guerra establish an 11-point advantage heading to Spain. Despite six drivers being in mathematical contention for title honours, Mexican Guerra can become champion by finishing third in his Mitsubishi Lancer.

“It would be a dream come true to win and take the title in Spain as it would be the perfect way to honour my country,” explained the Ralliart Italia driver. “But there will be some very tough competition and everyone will be pushing hard so I’m preparing myself for what will undoubtedly be a big battle.”

Equal on points are Michal Kosciuszko and Valeriy Gorban. Both will be hoping to win and hoping that Guerra falters in order to triumph.

“We really need to win in Spain,” admitted Pole Kosciuszko, who finished third in last year’s standings. “I had hoped to make up more than four points to Benito in Sardinia but now everything will be decided later this week. We are expecting an emotional rally for both us, and for our fans.”

Fuchs is fourth in the standings, 13 behind Guerra with Argentina Subaru Impreza driver Marcos Ligato one point further back. Subhan Aksa, from Indonesia, is sixth in the table, 22 shy of Guerra and perhaps the outsider for championship honours.

Other PWRC runners on the entry for Spain are Mexico’s Ricardo Trivino, Britain’s Louise Cook, Italian duo Lorenzo Bertelli and Gianluca Linari, Ukraine’s Oleksii Kikireshko, who scored his first points of the season in Sardinia last time out, and Swedish lady driver Ramona Karlsson.

There are also two wildcard entrants in contention for PWRC points: former WRC Academy frontrunner Yeray Lemes and fellow Spaniard Josep Membrado.
