It was the Ford Fiesta Maxi Rally driver’s first victory on the event where he made his debut back in 1997 and marked his second win in succession this season, a result that moves him to the top of the drivers’ table after three events.
Production Car world championship star Marcos Ligato led after the opening asphalt-based leg but was unable to maintain his advantage on the gravel stages on day two. He settled for the runner-up spot, 10s behind Villagra.
Ligato’s one-time PWRC team-mate Gabriel Pozzo finished in fifth position, while former WRC Academy regular Miguel Baldoni started the event leading the championship but a crash on the opening day left his Volkswagen Gol with extensive front-end damage. He slips to third in the title race, 14 points behind Villagra.
Villagra, a multiple Argentine champion, was a regular in the WRC with the Munchi’s Ford World Rally Team for five seasons. He placed 13th in last year’s standings.
