A study announced today could pave the way for a new generation of WRC video games in which players compete against the professionals using GPS data from actual rallies.
WRC promoter North One Sport has launched a feasibility study into the new interactive gaming concept in partnership with two leaders in the gaming and positioning data industries - iOpener and Black Bean Games - and with backing from the Gulf Horizon Group.
The companies will collect a continuous stream of positioning and telemetry data from the cars competing on WRC rallies this year and hope to create a gaming experience with new levels of accuracy and realism.
“This study should take us a step closer to our goal of allowing WRC fans anywhere in the world the opportunity to become part of the action,” said Simon Long, CEO of North One Sport. “Using the internet they would be able to compete in the rally on the same stages against some of the best drivers in the world. If this test is successful then we hope in the future to crown our first virtual rally champion.”
