Protasov to
the rescue

Just when you thought that it was a dog-eat-dog world out there, characterised by cut-throat competition, Ukrainian driver Yuriy Protasov proved that there was still plenty of scope for sporting conduct on Rally Italia Sardegna last week.

Protasov came to the aid of Czech Ford National Team driver Martin Prokop, who had gone off on a road section and got his Fiesta RS WRC stuck.

“Everyone seemed to be driving past him, and he had no way of getting out, so I thought that was not very nice,” explained Protasov. “So we stopped, got a tow rope, and pulled him out. Otherwise I am not sure that he would have been able to continue.”

Proving that good deeds do indeed pay off, Protasov was rewarded with a bottle of champagne that a grateful Prokop presented to him that very evening. Not only that, but Protasov also won Group N overall in Sardinia with his Subaru Impreza, as well as winning the Rally Class section of the event.

The Ukranian now just needs to finish the next round in Spain to clinch the Rally Class series, which will reward him with a fully-paid drive in a Symtech Racing R4 Impreza next year.

Meanwhile, Prokop got to the finish in eighth position, thanks in part to Protasov.
