The Bishop's Arms: www.bishopsarms.com is part of a hotel near the river. It claims to have the widest selection of beers and whiskies in the city, and the display doesn't let the claim down. It's a jumping sort of placed, much favoured by locals on a mission to have a good time.

Alternatively, go stargazing in the Scandic Winn Hotel: www.scandic-hotels.com/winn about 200 metres from Rally HQ at the conference centre. There are movers and shakers in every corner. On the final night of the event, it absolutely heaves with people and is as lively as any bar in the world, but more expensive than most. The rally menu in the restaurant isn't that bad, though.

Our pick for a good al-rounder is Valfrids: www.valfrids.nu It's close to the city, has reasonable prices (a glass of wine is about 7 euros) and is cosy, with a nice lounge area at the front and bar stools and a lively eating section at the rear. The staff are friendly and helpful, and there's pub grub too.

If you're still not ready for ready for bed, or if dancing is your thing, then be sure to check out the Plaza Nattklubb: www.plaza-karlstad.nu which features two dance floors - one in a 26-metre-high atrium - or Arena: www.arena-nattklubb.nu which often hosts live bands.
