On this rally last year
Sebastien Loeb won for a sixth time following a dominant performance behind the wheel of his Citroen DS3 WRC. Dani Sordo finished second in his MINI John Cooper Works WRC, the marque’s first podium on the legendary event since Rauno Aaltonen took the overall victory in 1967 in a Cooper S. Petter Solberg, in a Fiesta RS WRC, bagged the final podium spot on his return to the factory Ford team. Mikko Hirvonen marked his debut for the works Citroen squad in fourth with Evgeny Novikov impressing throughout to take fifth in his M-Sport Fiesta.
Local hero
The 2013 Rallye Monte-Carlo marks the 40th anniversary of the FIA World Rally Championship, the series having been inaugurated with this round in 1973. Remarkably, the winning co-driver of the 1973 Rallye Monte-Carlo will also be participating in the 40th WRC anniversary event. Michele Espinos - better known by her pseudonym ‘Biche’ navigated Jean-Claude Andruet to victory in a Renault Alpine A110. Now 64, she will start this year in car #73 (Mitsubishi Evo IX) alongside Italian Maurizio Verini.
