In the third of our series, we took a brave pill and asked Loeb’s former team-mate Sebastien Ogier for his opinion on the man he famously fell out with at Citroen, and hopes to beat this week in France.
Q: What makes Sebastien Loeb such a great driver?
SO: “I think he is so strong because he is an extremely consistent driver. He has hardly ever made big mistakes during his whole career. Because of this, he built up a big self-confidence which helps of course if you are under pressure. Mentally for sure he is one of the strongest of all time. And also he is very fast on every surface, no matter if tarmac, gravel, snow or ice.”
Q: Where does he rank in the all time great drivers?
SO: “If you go on the number of titles and records then he is the greatest and most successful of all time. But in my opinion it’s difficult to compare drivers from different decades. Different drivers were really great at different times; Carlos Sainz in the 90s, for example. So for me it’s not possible to compare the drivers of different generations. It would be the same in soccer if you tried to compare Pele with Messi for example.”
Q: Do you have a favourite ‘Loeb’ memory?
SO: “My best memory was in 2007 when I met him for the first time when I was racing in the Peugeot Cup with the French federation. It was during Rally du Limousin in the French championship. He was there to follow the race and watch his brother in law. After the race he came over and congratulated me on my performance. That was really a special moment. And for sure it helped me to get known at the Citroen team as well, because he spread my name there to the right people.”
