Qatar M-Sport World Rally team boss Malcolm Wilson described the damage to Evgeny Novikov’s crashed Fiesta RS as ‘the worst we have seen for quite some time.’ The Russian rolled out in SS2 yesterday and Wilson said the damage was far too great to repair in the time allowed.
Wilson told wrc.com that the crash compressed the bulk head onto the roll cage at the front of the car, as well as destroying the front left suspension unit. The gearbox was shattered while at the rear of the car the chassis rail and anti-roll bar were both broken, along with the suspension and differential.
WRC 2 front-runner Lorenzo Bertelli has been one of many drivers in the category unhappy at the one minute gaps in the dusty stages. He took the matter into his own hands in SS12 when he deliberately checked in a minute late. The penalty was 10 seconds but he earned himself a clear run through the 22.35km test.
