Volkswagen joined the WRC in January, with the original aim of podium finishes in its debut WRC season, wins in its second, and titles in its third.
But after seven rally wins from the eleven contested so far, Volkswagen heads to Salou with an 80-point lead over defending champions Citroen, the titleholders since 2008.
And with only two rounds of the season to go, six points from Sebastien Ogier or Jari-Matti Latvala in Spain would be enough to send the manufacturers crown to the team base in Wolfsburg.
“Seventh place is all we need to claim the world championship title”, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “If things go as normal, we’ll manage that in Spain. It really would be the icing on the cake if we were to achieve this in our debut season – we would never even have dreamed of it at the beginning.
“The whole team will give their all once again to make sure that nothing out of the ordinary happens. There is no weak point in our team, and I’m really proud of that,” he added.
