Why Elena
is no
golden
oldie

As if nine FIA World Rally Championship titles are not enough, Citroen's Daniel Elena has got himself a smart gold watch.

After many years of loyal service, a gold watch marks a typical retirement present for any departing employee - standing for quality, reliability, consistency and punctuality: all attributes that you look for in a hard-working professional.

So it was probably fitting that at the end of his final full WRC season on RallyRACC-Rally de Espana earlier this month, Elena was presented with not one, but two gold watches in Spain by the man who takes him to places that no other drivers go: Sebastien Loeb.

Okay, so only the actual bezel of the watch was gold, and strictly speaking gold-coloured is what we mean rather than pure gold. But it’s the thought that counts...

“Actually it should really be Seb having these watches because he is the one who is always late - especially in the mornings!” joked Elena, after receiving his limited edition watch from its maker, Fastime Copilote, whose products are used by several leading WRC co-drivers. “But thank you - I am very happy to receive these presents, although I’m not retiring yet. We’re already back in Monte Carlo next year, after all...”
