The Van Merksteijn Motorsport pilot was inside the top 20 when he left the road four kilometres into Friday’s second stage and retired.
“It is a shame that I already had to retire so early into this fantastic rally,” said the Dutchman. “The weather condition on Thursday created a precarious situation but apart from that it is a wonderful event. I had hoped to finish the season with a good result but unfortunately that was not meant to be. I will definitely return to Wales in the future.”
Van Merksteijn Jr, who has contested an expanded programme of world championship rallies this season in a Citroen DS3 WRC, claimed his maiden WRC points on ADAC Rallye Deutschland in August.
