Sandell is back in WRC action for the first time since his home event, Rally Sweden, back in February.
With regular co-driver Staffan Parmander unable to take part in Portugal due to business commitments, Sandell has drafted in the experienced Maria Andersson as a replacement.
“Preparations have gone according to plan and it feels like me and Maria have had time to find a good solution with each other and write new pace notes together,” said Sandell. “We had a good test last Friday and we have a good feeling for the rally.”
Sandell will compete for the newly-formed Prodrive WRC Team with backing from the Sweden World Rally Team initiative. He says he’s raring to go in Portugal.
“Eighth place was a great result for me in Sweden,” said the former Junior world champion. “As the rally went on I got more and more confident in the car and my speed increased. I would like to continue in Portugal where I left off in Sweden and keep improving my pace. I think we can definitely finish in a higher position than before and I will be aiming for a top five finish.”
