Q&A:
Matthew
Wilson

Matthew Wilson completed the opening day of Wales Rally GB in ninth overall in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC on his first event back in the FIA World Rally Championship for nine months. The Cumbrian ace spoke to WRC.com.

How pleased were you with what you achieved on your first day back in the WRC? “I’ve enjoyed the driving and it’s fantastic to be back. Seeing some of the splits and times compared to last year I’ve actually made a step up. It’s roughly what we expected. I was definitely a bit rusty in the morning but I’ve really enjoyed it and the stages have been in a fantastic condition.”

Was it hard coming back? “It was just me being out of the car for so long that was the problem. You’ve got the really fast sections for quite a long time but then you’ve got the distances into the slow corners and I was just braking way too early. But that got a lot better during the afternoon.”

What was the best thing about being back? “It was just nice to be back in the car and that thrill of driving, going through places like Hafren where it’s absolutely flat. That’s definitely what I’ve missed. When stages are fast and flowing like that it’s really good to be back in the driving seat.”

Any regrets so far? “You always want more time in the car competing against these guys who have been in all year. It will come but it just takes time. The worst point in the whole day was the road section back to Cardiff, that took a long time.”

What’s your plan for today? “We’re just going to try to push on again. The only thing I’m hoping is that it has rained overnight because tomorrow will be fairly loose from where I am on the road. A little bit of rain will help the cause a bit.”
