Fortunately for them – and us – Mikkelsen’s grasp of English is impeccable, and he is happy to oblige with answers as fluent as any graduate from Oxford or Cambridge universities could achieve.
Having taken residence in a Polo R WRC with the Volkswagen Motorsport II squad, the ever helpful Andreas has decided to add German to his repertoire.
And just in case German media thrust a microphone in front of him at a stage finish, he has given himself a few helping hints to provide the perfect answer.
A sheet of paper attached to the inside of his door at this morning’s qualifying stage had some typical answers that he might use written in English – with a German translation below!
“That’s supposed to be a secret!” laughed Mikkelsen later.
“When I’m back home and on planes, I try to learn a little bit of German. So I’ve put this in the car to try and remember a few different phrases and speak a little bit of the language.
“I’m practising, so my German is improving but I have a long way to before it’s as good as my English,” he added.
So, if you listen carefully to Mikkelsen on WRC Live this weekend you might hear him say in perfect German:
“Stage fine, good rhythm, clean run, let’s go on like that.”
“Honestly, I had quite a moment in one right hander. I was a bit too fast but luckily it went well.”
“We are on a good strategy so far. If we can continue like that a spot on the podium is possible.”
“Gut gemacht, Andreas!”
(For our English speaking readers, that means: “Well done, Andreas!”)
