Miki Biasion, who won back-to-back FIA World Rally Championship titles between 1988 and 1989, will return to action next year when he contests the Classic Rally of Otago from 5-7 April.

Rather than pilot the Lancia Delta Integrale in which he forged his reputation as one of the WRC’s greats, Biasion will compete in a Porsche 911 owned by Allan Dippie. Fabrizia Pons, one of only two people to score WRC points as a driver and co-driver, will navigate her fellow Italian.

Roger Oakley, spokesperson for the New Zealand championship round, said: “Miki being here will provide a lot of excitement for the event, and will attract a lot of competitors wishing to see how they compare against him. He will undoubtedly be very fast, and the Porsche is a fantastic car, but there will a lot of speculation about how this combination will fare against the dominant Ford Escort BDAs.”

Biasion retired from regular competition at the end of the 1994 season but not before he’d won 17 world championship rallies during a career spanning 15 seasons. While the 54-year-old is a newcomer to Rally of Otago, Pons has co-driven for many of the event’s international drivers including Alex Fiorio, Pasi Hagstrom, Michele Mouton and Ari Vatanen.
