Wilks wins in Wales



Britain's Guy Wilks has won the Production car World Rally Championship class as well as the British Rally Championship on his home event of Wales Rally GB.

Wilks dominated most of the P-WRC event to finish 34.2 seconds ahead of Juho Hanninen who suffered a puncture on the rear of his Mitsubishi Lancer 5km from the finish of SS15.

Mark Higgins, who was holding second going into the final day of competion, lost the position, finishing one minute 12.3 seconds behind the Finnish driver. Higgins lost fourth gear and the rear shock absorbers on the second stage of the day.

Italy's Alessandro Bettega took fourth despite a spin at the start of SS14 while driving his sixth different car of the year, a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX. He was followed by David Higgins, one minute 45.5 seconds between the two drivers.

Sixth was taken by Mirco Baldacci who was suffering engine problems. He was one minute 40 seconds behind Higgins and seven minutes 36.1 seconds in front of Portugal's Armindo Araujo. Araujo lost a lot of time when he suffered two punctures on SS15 and didn't have a spare, .

Stepan Vojtech was eighth, one minute 42.5 seconds behind seventh place.

Meanwhile, Toshi Arai was crowned 2007 FIA Production car World Rally Champion over the weekend, after his closest title rival, Gabriel Pozzo, went off on day one, damaging his suspension and retiring from the event, unable to restart on Saturday under SupeRally regulations.*
