Despite the bone dry conditions in Turkey, Suzuki driver Per-Gunnar Andersson was troubled by showers on today’s opening test when the cockpit fire extinguisher system in his car went off unexpectedly.
Andersson was 4km into the 22km Perge stage when the sprinkler system started firing foamy water at him and co-driver Jonas Andersson.
“I think we it a rock, and the impact activated the extinguishers,” said Andersson. “I just tried to carry on as normally as possible but it wasn’t easy; my feet kept slipping off the pedals and my race suit was soaking.”
The false alarm also presented problems for co-driver Jonas. “His pace note book got a bit soggy, but he did his best to cover the spray nozzle with his foot and divert the water away from the rest of his books in the door pocket,” explained P-G.
Remarkably, despite the extinguisher episode and a stall on the final kilometres, Andersson completed the stage in the sixth fastest time.
