The Polo R WRC
for the road

Here's some very good news for aspiring rally stars: you don't have to be Sebastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala, or Andreas Mikkelsen to drive a brand new Volkswagen Polo R WRC.

Volkswagen has also announced a limited edition road car to go alongside its freshly-launched FIA World Rally Championship challenger, which is also called the Polo R WRC.

The world’s fastest shopping trolley boasts 217 horsepower and has a top speed of 243kph, accelerating from 0-100kph in 6.4 seconds, which makes it comfortably the quickest Polo ever built and allows it to out-perform most of its hot hatch rivals. It’s powered by a two-litre turbocharged engine, similar to the one found in the iconic Golf GTI.

According to Volkswagen, the new limited edition Polo road car has more in common with its rallying counterpart than just the badge, as it shares some lightweight components and other engineering solutions with the identically-named rally car.

There’s also plenty of WRC branding both inside and out, more aerodynamic appendages than you can see on a fighter plane, and a similar colour scheme to the rally car.

If you want one though you’ll have to hurry: only 2500 examples are to be built, costing €33,000 each. There’s also a bit of a wait: deliveries are expected to commence in September 2013. We reckon it will be worth it though...
