Toni Gardemeister's Suzuki SX4 WRC has been withdrawn from the rally with engine damage caused when it overheated on Saturday's last stage.
Team manager Akira Kawada said: "The engine overheated near the end of SS14 and when the car returned to Valance we discovered some internal damage. We decided not to continue so we can open the engine and try and find out what happened. But we will do this back at the team's factory in Paris, not here.
"It's disappointing, but there was no point in Toni re-staring tomorrow. In its condition it is doubtful the engine would have lasted the 48km liaison route from Monaco to the remote service - let alone the first stage."
Gardemeister was in tenth place before his retirement. Per-Gunnar Andersson is eighth in the second SX4 WRC.
