Sebastien Loeb was fastest on the first stage of day two, in an effort to pull away from his closest rival and Citroen team-mate Dani Sordo.
Loeb’s winning time of 18m54.4 was eight seconds better than Sordo’s, who was next fastest. “I don’t have a big experience of these tyres but Dani is very quick here and we have to make a gap,” said Loeb. “So this morning I said okay, I have to go now.”
SS3 was the longest of the day and a fast, narrow and technical wake-up call for the WRC crews. Despite a biting wind, a relatively mild temperature of 7║ Celsius meant there was no ice on the predominantly dry road, although a number of damp sections made grip levels tricky to predict.
Sordo reported some understeer through the 29km stage but otherwise had a clear run. Mikko Hirvonen was third fastest, posting a time less than two seconds slower than Sordo’s. “That was very good,” said Hirvonen. “I’m pleased with the time. Okay, we didn’t catch Dani but we’re matching his pace. Now I’m happy.”
