Before the start of SS14 Jari-Matti Latvala said he was going to drive as quickly as possible through the remaining mountain stages, and on the first of the pair the Finn was true to his word.
“It was as good stage, and if the positions stay like this then it’s a good place to be tomorrow,” said Latvala. “I’m just trying to increase my advantage over Loeb; then we have a chance of beating him.”
Hirvonen completed the stage in the second fastest time, and pulled another 1.6 seconds ahead of his Championship rival Sebastien Loeb. “It’s going to be tight,” Hirvonen said at the end.
Loeb meanwhile set the fourth fastest time and was looking forward the end of the day and the end of his road sweeping duties. “I’m still pushing at my limit; there’s nothing more I can do,” he said. “I’ll be glad if I can get a better position on Sunday.”
