Mikko Hirvonen dominated day one of Wales Rally GB, and Jari-Matti Latvala dominated day two. It is only appropriate that on day they would tie for the opening stage win. The Stobart and BP-Ford drivers completed the tricky opening test with a time of 16 minutest 14.2 seconds, two seconds quicker than Marcus Gronholm in third.
Dani Sordo took fourth on the stage a further 9.8 seconds behind Gronholm. Fifth went to a very cautious Sebastien Loeb, whose main concern is finishing the final three stages of the day. Just 0.4 seconds behind the Citroen driver was Petter Solberg, who continues to lose time little by little to the other Citroen of Sordo. Sordo is still a healthy 27.1 seconds adrift of fourth place, but another spin by Solberg or any other calamity by the Subaru driver will close that gap quickly.
Matthew Wilson took seventh on the stage, 6.7 seconds back and has gone ahead of Chris Atkinson for sixth overall. Atkinson was well down the order on the stage after suffering windscreen wiper problems, again, on his Impreza. By stage's end the Australina could barely see out of the front of his car, making his pace on the final stage before service questionable.
