Dani Sordo was fastest on the final stage of the morning loop, SS12, to re-take the lead he lost to Loeb earlier.
Sordo’s position at the top of the leaderboard is far from secure, however, because behind him both BP-Ford drivers are less than six seconds away.
Jari-Matti Latvala remains Sordo’s closest rival, just 0.7sec back, while Mikko Hirvonen is close too - exactly six seconds behind the Spaniard.
Whether the cleaner repeated stages of the afternoon will enable Sordo to keep the Fords behind remains to be seen, but for Latvala and Hirvonen, Loeb’s retirement immediately brought the rally lead 34 seconds closer.
At the end of SS11 - and before Loeb’s crash - a frustrated Hirvonen said he needed a boost: “If Seb was not in the rally it would be more interesting for me, because I am pushing and cannot catch him!”
Well, he’s got his chance to make it interesting now.
