Double world rally champion Marcus Gronholm says that since he retired from the WRC at the end of 2007 he misses the excitement of competition but not the long hours.
Gronholm, who still has an ‘ambassadorial’ contract with Ford, has not ruled out a return to motorsport in the future - most likely on a rally, rallycross or motocross event - but says he isn’t keen on a full-time comeback.
Speculation that Gronholm might soon be back behind a steering wheel increased after he drove a 500bhp rallycross Ford Fiesta at a secret test in Sweden at the beginning of March.
The 40-year-old Finn does not have any strong links to the sport but knows Andreas Eriksson, who runs Ford Team RS Sweden and is building two Fiestas for this year’s European Rallycross Championship. After the test Gronholm said he was interested in competing in one of the cars in Sweden or Norway.
“Maybe it would be nice to do a race, but only one,” said Gronholm. “I don’t like the thought of doing 11 weekends. I don’t really work weekends anymore, but I am missing the feeling of competition a little bit.”
