Stobart VK M-Sport Ford rally team driver Gigi Galli holds third position after SS4, but could have been leading the rally if he hadn’t had to stop to make emergency repair to his car.
Galli set the third, second and finally the fastest time over Friday’s three opening stages, and starts the repeat loop in third place overall.
But Galli’s progress was hampered by a small fire to the rear bumper of his Stobart Ford Focus RS at the end of stage 2, caused by the heat of the exhaust pipe.
“Just after the first stage today we stopped to check the tyre pressures and change a wheel when we noticed the rear bumper was on fire,” said Galli. “So Giovanni [Bernacchini - co-driver] and I had to get out of the car and put the fire out in the road section. Because of this we checked in two seconds late to the start of stage 3 and had to take a 10-second penalty which made me lose some concentration during the stage. But OK I found a good rhythm on stage four; we were on fire this morning - literally!”
