BP Ford Abu Dhabi team principal Malcolm Wilson has told both Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala to drive at 100 per cent over the two remaining stages of Rally Turkey.
Wilson said he would prefer Hirvonen and Latvala to finish in the positions they held after SS17, but with Sebastien Loeb so close behind, it was too risky to try and influence the outcome for his drivers.
“It’s not an ideal situation; I wouldn’t choose to have both my guys having to drive flat-out, but they need to,” said Wilson. “Mikko and Jari-Matti can’t do any different to what they’ve done this morning. They have to keep the pressure on Sebastien. At the moment he’s too close; if anything happens he’s there to pounce. We’re looking at tyre wear now and expect it will be a lot worse on the second passage. I think there’s a chance everybody will start to lose out in the last four or five kilometres of the repeated Olympos. In an ideal world the positions would stay as they are now. Of course we’ll be monitoring their times, but Mikko and Jari-Matti will do their own thing.”
