Sebastien Loeb was the fastest driver on Thursday evening’s Super Special stage at Killeri - the traditional curtain raiser to Rally Finland.
In front of thousands of spectators Loeb drifted his Citroen C4 WRC around the 2.06km figure-of-eight circuit in 1m 20.5s, three-tenths of a second quicker than his closest rival, his Citroen Total team-mate Dani Sordo.
Subaru’s Chris Atkinson and BP Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen tied third place, both one-tenth of a second slower than Sordo.
“If the rest of the rally goes like this, then it will be great!” said Loeb. “Tonight my priority was not to make any mistakes and not to lose much time, so it’s okay. Leading is a good position to be in, but we’ll have to wait until tomorrow before we get to the proper Rally Finland stages.”
The first full day of the rally gets underway from 0630hrs on Friday, when cars leave the Jyvaskyla service park to tackle nine high speed gravel stages. The day rounds off with a second visit to Killeri in the evening.
Friday’s first stage, Vellipohja, begins at 0730hrs (local time - CET+1).
