Chris Atkinson of the Subaru World Rally Team says he is no longer fighting his team-mate Petter Solberg for second place of Rally Argentina
Atkinson lost the position to Solberg on the day’s opening stage, but by the midpoint service he had closed in on his team-mate, and began the afternoon loop just 4.1 seconds behind.
But ahead of Saturday’s short Superspecial stage, Atkinson accepted the potential for two Subarus on Sunday’s podium was too important to risk by jostling for position.
If things stay as they are, Subaru will score its first double podium since Rally GB 2003 when Petter Solberg was first and Tommi Makinen third.
“I’ve backed right off”, said Atkinson. “I’m not going slowly but there’s no need to take any risks. The points for Subaru are the biggest priority now. Of course second place would be nice, but I still have a chance for my third podium from four rallies - which is a better start to the season that I had originally hoped for. Petter has driven well here so we’ll let him have it today. Our days will come.”
