Yuriy Protasov started competing in his home country of Ukraine in 2005 and won the national title three years later.
In 2010 he stepped up to international competition in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and the European Championship, and took maximum ERC points at the Elpa Rally.
In 2011 he made his WRC debut in Sweden, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X in the PWRC. He finished second in class, his best result in a three-event programme.
The following year he switched to a Subaru Impreza WRX before a successful campaign last year, in which he finished third in the WRC 2 standings. He started the year in a Symtech Racing Impreza WRX, before switching to MM-Motorsport in a Ford Fiesta RRC and then a Fiesta R5.
