Kaj Lindström has been rallying for more than two decades, but it was partnering another Finn, Tapio Laukkanen, to the British Championship title in 1999 that showed he had the maturity and experience to make it to the top.

Lindström’s partnership with Laukkanen continued through 2001, however his biggest break came on the 2001 Rally GB when he was asked by Tommi Mäkinen to deputise for his injured co-driver Risto Mannisenmäki. The partnership worked well, and Kaj contested the entire 2002 and 2003 season alongside Mäkinen at the Subaru World Rally Team.

Following Mäkinen's retirement at the end of that year, Lindström's WRC experience kept him in demand as co-driver to a number of different privateers. He maintained his link with Makinen, too, and when F1 star Kimi Raikkonen started rallying in 2009, Mäkinen put the two drivers together. The partnership worked out, and Lindström read notes throughout Raikkonen’s two high profile seasons with Citroen.

A mixed Finnish championship and IRC programme alongside Mikko Pajunen followed in 2012, before Lindström hooked up with Finnish championship stalwart Jari Ketomaa for WRC 2 campaigns in a Ford Fiesta R5 in 2014 and 2015.

Lindström returns to the top level in 2017, partnering fellow Finn Juho Hänninen in Toyota Gazoo Racing’s new Yaris World Rally Car.
