Rallying is in the Bernacchini blood as Giovanni's father, Arnaldo, was a successful co-driver in the 1970s and 1980s.

Giovanni made his debut in the 1995 Fiat Cinquecento trophy in Italy and quickly became one of the most sought-after co-drivers there.

In 1997 he won the Golden Kinzika trophy for best co-driver of the year.

He partnered Paulo Andreucci to three European Championship victories in 1999 and 2000 and guided Andrea Dallavilla to second place in the 2001 JWRC - beaten only by a certain Sebastien Loeb!

They challenged for the crown again the following season, this time being pipped at the post by Dani Sordo.

Bernacchini teamed up with Gigi Galli and the duo claimed podiums in Argentina and Sweden until, in 2009, he joined Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Since then the duo have won four Middle East Rally Championship titles and finished third in the PWRC.
