Route

  • Costa Daurada holiday resort of Salou, south of Barcelona, is the host town.
  • The WRC’s only mixed surface encounter covers familiar roads in the hills of Tarragona.
  • It opens on Thursday night with a street stage in the Montjuïc area of Barcelona, on roads that hosted the Spanish Grand Prix F1 race on four occasions.
  • Friday’s action is predominantly gravel, but with asphalt sections in the long Terra Alta test. Four morning stages are repeated in the afternoon after tyre fitting in Ascó.
  • The second and third legs are entirely asphalt. Saturday mixes roads not used since 2013 with tests driven in the opposite direction to 2015. A mid-leg service splits the day, which ends with the fan favourite test along Salou seafront.
  • Two loops of two tests comprise the final leg, ending with the live TV Power Stage.

History

  • First run in 1957 and included in the European Championship from 1975.
  • Entered the WRC in 1991 when it was based on the Costa Brava in Lloret de Mar.
  • Relocated to Salou in 2002 and after being a pure asphalt event, it developed into a mixed surface event in 2010.
  • Sébastien Loeb dominated the rally, winning every year between 2005 and 2012.

What’s new for 2016

  • Sunday morning’s opening Pratdip stage will be driven in darkness by the early starters.
  • Saturday’s Vilaplana and Alcover - Capafonts tests are new.

Don’t miss

  • Plan a trip to the PortAventura service park on the edge of Salou. Cars are serviced there on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and when you have seen enough of that, a visit to the roller-coasters in the adjacent theme park will round off a perfect day.
