A ski instructor by trade, Yoann's rally career stretches back to 2001 when he began tackling club and national events in his native France.

He contested the Citroën Challenge and Suzuki Rally Cup in France before winning the latter on his second attempt in 2008.

The following year had a more international flavour, with five appearances in the Junior WRC, but from 2010 to 2014 he was back on familiar territory, honing his technique on French Tarmac and gravel rallies, and winning the Opel Cup in 2013.

In 2015 he progressed from an Opel Adam R2 car to a 4WD Peugeot 208 T16 and began working with hugely experienced co-driver Denis Giraudet. Another season in the French Tarmac championship netted four class wins and an overall victory at the Critérium des Cévennes.

Bonato returned to the world stage in 2016 for a debut WRC 2 season in an R5 spec Citroën DS 3. He reached the podium in Corsica, and is back for more in 2017.
