Rallying is in the genes for Max, who is the youngest son of 1981 World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen.

Max was 21 years old when he tackled his first rally in 2012, and by the end of 2013 he had tackled 15 mostly Finnish events at the wheel of a Ford Fiesta R2.

He stayed in the Ford for 2014, when he took his rallying further afield with campaigns in the Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy and two-wheel drive category of the FIA European Rally Championship.

He returned for a second DDFT season in 2015 and finished third, having secured his first win at the Portuguese round. A third campaign followed in 2016, along with a selection of British championship rallies. He won his home DDFT round in Finland and finished as series runner-up.

For 2017, Vatanen will step up to a four-wheel-drive Fiesta R5 for his first taste of WRC 2 competition. His season will include DMACK prize drives in Portugal and Finland.
