With his grandfather and father both keen rally drivers, it was almost inevitable that Al-Kuwari would end up behind the wheel himself.
His first taste of competition came in 2000, when he borrowed a Nissan Patrol from a Qatari royal, Sheikh Hamad Bin Eid Al Thani, and drove it on three national rallies in Qatar.
By 2003 he had progressed to his own Group N Mitsubishi Lancer and his first season in the Middle East Rally Championship.
Over the next seven seasons he gained experience in MERC and Qatar championship rallies, eventually winning the Qatar championship in 2011.
Al-Kuwari’s international breakthrough came in 2012, when he switched car to a Mini Cooper S2000 and established a co-driving partnership with Irishman Killian Duffy for a busy season of MERC, Qatar and ERC rallies.
He also entered the WRC rounds in Greece and Spain in a Mini World Rally Car - achieving 10th overall on his debut in Greece.
The pair embarked on a full WRC2 season with a Fiesta RRC in 2013 and had considerable success, winning the rounds in Mexico, Argentina and Australia and narrowly missing out on the title to F1 ace Robert Kubica.
