Alex Gelsomino may be best known for being part of Ken Block’s American dream, but his name is actually Alessandro and he comes from Sicily, having only moved to the United States in the mid-1990s.
Gelsomino took his first steps in co-driving through various one-make series in Italy, his passion for the sport being so overwhelming that he applied for his competition licence on the same day that he got his road car licence. His abilities were soon picked up on by Block, who drafted him into the co-driver’s seat of the Subaru Impreza that he was using at the time.
They made their WRC debut on Rally Mexico in 2007, but the duo really hit the headlines at the same event three years later, when they made their debut with top 10 pace in a Ford Focus WRC entered by the Monster World Rally Team.
With Block’s focus now on Gymkhana and US championship rather than WRC events, Gelsomino has formed a new partnership for 2014 with established Middle East Championship driver Bin Eidan for the Kuwaiti’s debut season in WRC2.
