Route

  • Alghero, on the west coast of the Mediterranean island, hosts the service park for a third year.
  • The stage action kicks off on Thursday night with a 2km Super Special near Alghero. Friday’s itinerary features eight tests in the Logudoro and Anglona regions including an all-new stage called Tula.
  • Saturday will be the longest and toughest of the event with six stages totalling 177kms in the Monte Acuto region.
  • The final leg north of Alghero contains the familiar Cala Flumini coastal run and the new Sassari-Argentiera, the second pass of which forms the Power Stage.

History

  • Italy’s WRC counter was formerly a mixed surface event based in Sanremo, and known as the Rally of the Flowers when it was first held in 1928.
  • It formed part of the WRC from the championship’s beginning in 1973.
  • Michèle Mouton became the first and only woman to win a WRC round when she triumphed in 1981.
  • The rally moved to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in 2004.

What’s new for 2016 

  • Two brand new stages - Sassari-Argentiera and Tula - and the return of some Sardinian classics. 
  • Thursday night’s Ittiri Arena Show Super Special replaces the opening Citta’ di Cagliari stage from 2015. 
  • Super-sized 44km version of Monte Lerno is the longest stage of the event
