Born in Italy in 1958 Massimo ‘Miki’ Biasion won 17 WRC rallies in his career and was World Champion in 1988 and 1989. After tackling his home round of the series in 1980, 1981 and 1982 he came to prominence in 1983 when he won the European and Italian Rally Championships in a Jolly Club run Lancia 037.
In 1986 he joined the factory Lancia team as one of the pilots of the Group B Delta S4 and scored his first WRC win on that season’s Rally Argentina. Group B cars were banned at the end of the 1986 season but Biasion excelled in the Group A cars which replaced them. In 1987 he won three rallies in the Lancia Delta HF 4WD and finished the Drivers’ Championship as runner up to his team-mate Juha Kankkunen. In 1988 and 1989, however, Biasion totally dominated the series in his Delta Integrale; winning ten rallies and the Drivers’ title on both occasions.
After such a phenomenal period of success, however, Biasion struggled in the years that followed. In 1990 he notched up two victories but in 1991 he failed to win a rally at all. In 1992 he was signed by the Ford team, but fared no better that year with the Sierra RS Cosworth. His last WRC win came on the 1993 Acropolis with the Escort RS Cosworth. The following year he parted company with Ford and he retired from the WRC altogether at the end of the 1995 season.
